Singer asks not to be confused with singer

Sheryl Renee, Denver
Wednesday, July 9, 2008

My name is Sheryl Renee. I am a Coloradan and a professional vocalist here in town. Please do not confuse me with Rene Marie, the woman who recently sang Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing at the mayor's State of the City speech.

Like Marie, I had the honor of being asked to perform the national anthem at a State of the City Address for our mayor, John Hickenlooper. I did so with the pride, honor and respect the anthem deserves.

Also like Marie, I am a black American, and I say to anyone and everyone: I love this country! This is my home, and through God's will, the perseverance of my ancestors and the hard work of my elders, I enjoy untold freedoms. Like all things in life, this country is far from perfect, but I will not spit on her.

I love our national anthem. Every time I sing The Star-Spangled Banner, I am moved, because I know that it means something to people in this country, and through my love of it, my delivery touches people.

So please don't confuse us. My name is Sheryl Renee - don't stop calling me to render this 70-second song. It truly means something.
